Flat Stanley letters. June 2, 2011

Filed under: News,Our Work — Miss Dillon @ 6:30 pm

As the sports day is taking place tomorrow, we will be writing our letters next Tuesday as part of the Flat Stanley project. The project involves posting Stanley (like he was posted in the book) to someone you know and having them take Stanley somewhere, taking a photograph and explaining briefly where they took him. They can then either post him back to you at home or email us (address will be on the letter they receive) with the photo as an attachment (this may be an easier option).

In order to post the letters to a relative or friend (either in Ireland or the UK) the children will need the address of the person to whom they are sending the letter-I will have the stamps and envelopes so all we need is the address.

Please send in the address of the person to whom your child is sending their Flat Stanley to, next Tuesday 7th June so that we will be able to complete this project before the end of the school year. Thanks-we look forward to seeing the photographs!

This week we are working on… May 10, 2011

Filed under: Our Work — Miss Dillon @ 4:25 pm

We are busy bees this week!

  • ADJECTIVES! We are learning to identify adjectives in the books we are reading and we are trying to incorporate them in our writing. Perhaps you could quiz your child about any describing words on the page they read tonight or maybe from their sails book! We re-read the fantastic The Gruffalo and everyone stood when we heard a describing word-it was fun!
  • – 8 tables to be learned off by heart this week at home.
  • Story: The Little Humpback Bridge.
  • Patterns and the 100 square. Word problems- altogether means add… less than means subtract. Word problems are a tricky area and we’ll be concentrating on them a lot until June.
  • Teeth: looking after our teeth and keeping our diet healthy. After we read and discussed the functions of teeth and how to take care of them we tried out a few games on this site: (We didn’t have much time in school to play this so I promised I would post the link here)
  • Continuing our drama on The Forest Child.

Our first trip to the moon May 5, 2011

Here are some photographs of the writing we did this week. The children wrore their own imaginative story based on the title: My first trip to the moon. They were all fantastic-well done everyone!

Happy Birthday to Sinead who is seven today! We hope you are having a great day!

Some things we’re working on this week… May 4, 2011

Filed under: Our Work — Miss Dillon @ 4:53 pm

  • “My First Trip to the Moon” We looked at words associated with the topic of travelling to space on the projector. We added more to the list. Everyone wrote a first draft yesterday and corrected it today. We then wrote our short story onto rockets. We’ll have pictures of our work tomorrow!
  • – 7 tables to be learned off by heart this week.
  • Learning about money- up to 20c this week. We are playing shop with toy money to work out how much change we should get!
  • Up, up and away in our readers- we are answering questions with full answers as part of our homework.

We’re working hard in first class, we have only nine weeks left in this school year (including this week!)
